‘A Garden Holiday? In the UK? – You gotta be joking’…
Okay, a bit but not entirely. August means holiday time like it or not. We are all at it one way or another, MP’s, children, even gardeners. Trouble is when the proper ‘Two Week’ break is over, the kids still have a month or so of mooching around the house with not much to do, so why not turn that space outside into a holiday garden?
Here’s how, and the plants won’t get smashed by footballs and clothes will stay dry. I know this because when I was about ten my father announced that he was going to erect a tent in the garden for us children to play in. I was skipping with excitement as my older sister described a beautiful red and white, candy striped structure with a pointed top and bunting round the roofline.
A place where fairies would visit at night and perform magic for us, where music would come from the trees and hedgehogs and badgers, owls and frogs would gather round a bonfire, clap hands and sing.
A black eagle wearing a golden chain around his neck perched on the branches above keeping an eye out for hobgoblins.
What we actually got was Dad’s old army tent.
Still, it was strictly out of bounds to uninvited grown-ups and became a bonafide place to hang out when it was raining. Once over the initial shock of its prosaic form, lack of windows and the dullness of colour it did indeed become a magical place, our own secret outdoor playroom, our base for a multitude of possibilities. When it rained, we could tie the flaps shut or throw them open and lift the sides when it was sunny.
Happily nowadays Tents and Gazebos can easily be bought, or hired, and with a little careful planning can be sensibly located in the garden. Add in a pot full of imagination and the kids of all ages will have hours of fun not to mention. So will their parents no doubt.
Add on a few games like giant Chess or Checkers,
or Skittles or Croquet…
and there giant chess sets too or try a little Badminton…
If that doesn’t crack it, try a rabbit
…and Dad can knock up a hutch .
How about renting a camper van for a few days adventure?
and if no-one wants to get bored in traffic preferring to stay at home? Well you are in luck, you can get into A Campervan Tent!
Still no good? What about a pack of cards?
“Full house! Three’s over sixes…”
